The NGO Coalition for the Community of Democracies was organized in order to engage a wide variety of concerned NGO's into active participation to support and encourage the work of the Community of Democracies as it:
1. Strengthens and improves democratic processes and facilities worldwide, especially in the fledgling democracies.
2. Facilitates the further extension of democracy.
3. Structure processes and facilities with which to protect fledgling democracies from overthrow by external aggression or by internal coup.
4. Researches, instructs and promulgates ways to improve and establish democratic processes.
5. Evolves into an organization, possibly a federation of democracies with limited jurisdiction, capable of keeping the peace, first within the Community and eventually in the world, thus supporting the United Nations and the permanent International Criminal Court by forming with them, the "Three Pillars of Peace."
Why is supporting democracy so important?
The sweet fruits of Liberty and justice are enjoyed by more and more around our globe. And when one looks at the short term political trend, one may get the pleasant impression that this progress, through expansion of democracy, is immutable. But this too pleasant an impression is false. If one were to look at the same line of progress just 60 short years ago, we would surely have concluded that the reverse was true, that tyranny was on the rise and was the irrevocable choice of social evolutionary forces and would soon spread and take firm root throughout the world.
We understand well and accept that within a nation, the processes and structures of democracy must be continually updated, rejuvenated and maintained. This is surely not less true internationally.
For those of us whose highest values are liberty, justice and abolishing poverty worldwide, we must harness our highest intelligence and greatest energy towards ensuring that the current trend of improving and expanding democracy is continued.
Further, research has confirmed that established democracies do not make war on each other. The more and better democracy, the closer and more assured will be a sustained and just peace for our planet. And it is now quite clear that concerted efforts can have a powerful effect on spreading, nurturing and strengthening democracy. Democracy leads to peace with increasing justice, health and prosperity.
Why is abolishing war and keeping the peace so very important?
Partly because, with the arrival of the Community of Democracies, a secure peace with justice is now a very solid, very real possibility. For more, please click here.
